Retiro Park – One of the greatest parks of Madrid, Spain By Deny Willson at 2010-05-28 01:49:12

A park is not just some flowering plants and tall trees with some lush grass around. Many of the parks in Spain have given a new definition to the parks. The great Guell Park in Barcelona is one of the standing examples of what a park could be. The other great example is the Retiro Park of Madrid.
Located in the centre of the city, this park measures about 350 acres or 1.4 sq. kilometers. This huge park has a beautiful layout with tall trees, flowering plants, lush lawns and separate path for walking and jogging. A big lake with facilities for boating, area reserved for restaurants and Children’s Park are some of the features of the park.
Brief history of the park:
It was in the year 1505 that Queen Isabel moved one of the monasteries to the place where the park is now located. A church was also built in the place. Later King Phillip II shifted the Court of Spain to the monastery built by Queen Isabel. Later the place did not receive enough attention and it was in the year 1868 that the local municipality took over the place and made some efforts to preserve the place. Later the Government of Spain stepped in and the monastery was preserved, several improvements were made and the entire park got a new look.
A brief insight into the park:
Rose garden:
Several renowned artists and architects have put their minds in beautifying this park. Prominent among them are the great sculptors El Angel Caido and Ricardo Belver. The Rosaleda rose garden is one of the places which attracts lot of visitors. Varieties of roses are grown here.
Fountain:
This is a stunningly beautiful work of El Angel Caido. Caido has designed the fountain in this park which looks like Lucifer falling from heaven. It is a great experience. It is said that Caido took cue from poetry Paradise Lost (3) of John Milton in designing the fountain. Every visitor applauds this great work of Caido.
Museum:
The museum called the Museo Del Ejercito has a collection of some of the renowned paintings of 19th and 20th century. Among the collections of art work, the work of Joaquin Sorolla, the renowned painter from Spain has been the centre of attraction. The sword and armor of Spain’s greatest warrior El Cid are also on display here. The Army museum is another section which receives lot of visitors. The armor and cross belonging to Christopher Columbus are on display here.
