Visiting the Balearic Islands
Everyone has heard of Ibiza with its non-stop partying, the famous and not so famous who are seen and photographed sunning themselves on its white sand beaches and its fabulous restaurants and shops. Not as famous as Ibiza are its other three main sister islands; Mallorca, Menorca and Formentara. They are part of the Balearic Islands and are found in the Mediterranean part of eastern Spain.
Language
The languages spoken in the Balearic Islands are Catalan as well as Spanish, but English is also spoken and understood by most people since tourism is the major industry in these islands.
Ibiza
Even though Ibiza is famous for its nightlife and party-like atmosphere, there is a quieter side to it. If you prefer a quieter place to enjoy the beaches, you can go to the northern side of the island. The villages are picturesque and beautiful and you can explore them at will, looking for souvenirs or just browsing in the many small shops. Many families prefer this side of Ibiza where they can still enjoy the beaches without the wild morning beach parties that take place on the other side of the island.
Mallorca
Like its sister island, Mallorca is also well-known for its party-like atmosphere, though not on the same scale as Ibiza. Its capital is Palma de Mallorca and with its quaint cobbled squares and postcard setting, it is an ideal place to visit and explore. You can enjoy its beautiful beaches and if you prefer water to sand, you can explore its wonderful coastline in a boat.
Menorca
Menorca is ideal for those who prefer a quieter holiday experience. Its more than 100 beaches are less crowded than those of Ibiza and Mallorca and you will like the tranquility of the seashore. You can visit the historic sites around the island and enjoy the fabulous sea-food that this island is famous for.
Formentara
Like Menorca, Formentara is a quiet and peaceful island where the tourist can enjoy the beaches and above all, the restaurants that have earned a reputation for sea-food. The naturist resort on the island attracts tourists from northern Europe who find the quiet atmosphere ideal for their holiday tours.
In the Balearic Islands you can enjoy the best of all possible worlds. Visit Ibiza for its stunning nightlife or Mallorca and Menorca for their quieter, more sedate pace. If you prefer peace and quiet, good sea-food and clean, less crowded beaches, you can do no better than spending a few days in Formentara.
